아르헨티나에서 태어나 미국LA에서 활동하는 아날리아 사반(b. 1980, Buenos Aires, Argentina)은 재료의 물질성 탐구와 실험을 통해 전통적 매체 해석의 경계선을 지속적으로 확장해온 작가이다. 말린 물감 덩어리를 캔버스 천 사이에 수 놓듯 집어넣어 화면을 구축한다거나 캔버스 위에 콘크리트로 화면plane을 만들고, 혹은 콘크리트 덩어리를 마주 겹쳐서 종이처럼 접어보는 등의 전통적 재료에 기반한 다양한 물질성 실험들을 통해 동시대 미술에서의 매체 구분이 인위적임을 지적하고 나아가 매체간의 근본적인 구분점이 무엇인지에 대해 질문한다.. 사반의 작업은 재료의 물리적 성격과 매체의 기본 전제를 해체하는 방식으로 이루어지는데, 그 과정에서 작가의 무의식이 침투하기도 한다. 무릇 작가가 사물의 작동원리를 해체할 때, 그/그녀는 무의식적으로 자신이 세상을 보는 방식을 투사하게 된다. 즉, 재료의 물성과 매체 실험에 천착하는 사반의 작업들도 선택된 재료들이 세상을 향한 특유의 무의식적 해석을 거쳐 재구성될 것임을 예상해볼 수 있다.

이번 전시의 제목 <입자 이론(Particle Theory)>은 작가의 창작 태도와 연관되어 있다. 사반은 물질의 원리를 이해하려는 과학자와 같은 태도로 회화를, 나아가 미술을 이루는 ‘입자’를 찾으려 한다. ‘Woven Painting’ 연작은 언뜻 회화처럼 보이지만 일반적인 회화와는 다르다. 작가는 아크릴 물감을 실처럼 굳힌 후 이를 이용하여 캔버스 천의 씨실과 날실 사이에 끼워넣어 화면을 구성한다. 이렇게 만들어진 캔버스는 물감이 얹혀질 수 있는 면이면서 동시에 물감 그 자체가 되어 재료 간 혼란을 불러일으킨다. 작가의 콘크리트 연작들, ‘Draped Concrete, ‘Polished Concrete’, ‘Folded Concrete’에서는 콘크리트라는 재료의 물성 실험을 통해 전통적 매체 해석에 대한 물음을 던진다. 그 견고한 인상과 달리 본래 가루에서 시작해 물과 공기를 만나 액체가 되었다가 결국 고체가 되어 다시 굳어지게 되는 입자의 성격을 고스란히 노출시킴으로써, 이 ‘입자’라는 물질의 근간을 이루는 아주 작은 단위에 기반한 질문을 미술의 영역으로 확대해 우리가 미술 작품을 볼 때 인지하는 가장 작은 단위는 무엇인지, 나아가 미술을 이루는 기본 조건들은 무엇인지, 그리고 이 조건들은 누가 만들어나가는 것인지에 대해 열린 질문을 던진다.

회화는 작가에게 중요한 화두이다. 새로운 매체가 발견되고 주목을 받는 지금도 회화는 여전히 가장 각광받고 사랑 받으며, 그만큼 자주 사형대에 올라 그 생과 사의 여부를 질문 받는 매체이기도 하다. 작가는 “우리는 왜 회화를 감상하며, 회화는 왜 미술사에서 그리도 중요한 역할을 차지하는가”라고 묻는다. 그녀는 재료의 물성 탐구를 통해 표면만으로는 감지되지 않는 회화의 정보와 물리적 구조를 전면에 노출시킴으로써 관람자로 하여금 그 구성요소를 새로운 방식으로 바라보게 하고자 한다. 대부분의 회화 작품이 화면plane위의 문제를 다룬다면, 사반은 사유의 범위를 넓혀 화면 뿐 아니라, 화면을 존재하게 하는 물리적 지지체technical support의 문제까지 회화의 영역으로 감싸 안는다. 사반의 ‘Woven Painting’, ‘Polished Concrete’와 같은 연작은 회화처럼 보이지만 회화가 아닌, 그렇다고 해서 조각도 아닌 모호한 용태로 존재하면서 각각의 간극에 대해 질문하게 만드는 기점이 된다. 그러나 사반이 물감 대신 콘크리트를 캔버스에 바를 때, 회화에 반(反)하려는 것은 아니다. 사반의 작업은 싸움과 같이 호쟁적인 인상보다는 대화와 같이 유연하고 풍부한 느낌을 준다. 작가는 이번 전시를 통해 그간 작가가 골몰해온 고민들을 함께 공유하고 그에 대한 답을 찾아나가는 계기로 삼고자 한다.

아날리아 사반은 미국 뉴올리언스 로욜라 대학(Loyola University)에서 시각미술을 전공하였고 LA에 위치한 캘리포니아대학(University of California) 에서 뉴 장르(New Genres)로 석사학위를 받았다. 포트워스 현대미술관(Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas, USA, 2019), 로스엔젤레스 해머미술관(Hammer Museum, LA, USA, 2019), 빅토리아국립미술관 트리엔날레(NGV  TRIENNIAL, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia 2017), LA 카운티미술관(LACMA, Los Angeles, USA, 2014), 팔레드도쿄(Palais de Tokyo, Paris, .France, 2013)를 포함하는 다수의 그룹전과 개인전에 참여했다. 2015, 2016년에 걸쳐 게티미술관(Getty Museum) 레지던시에 참여하였으며, 사반의 작품은 LA현대미술관(Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles), LA주립미술관(Los Angeles County Museum of Art), 퐁피두센터(Centre Pompidou, Paris)등에 소장되어 있다. LA예술위원회상(Art Council Award, Los Angeles, USA, 2002)을 포함하여 여러 기관으로부터 다수의 상을 받았다.
