일상 속 사물에 깃든 수천 겹의 추억
어릴 적 아파트 단지 안 시장 건물에 미국산 식료품 전문점이 있었다. 할머니는 고기를 먹는 날마다 앞접시에 AI 소스를 덜어 주셨다. 소스 특유의 시큼한 향이 싫었던 나는 케첩을 더 좋아했다. 하인즈 케첩은 늘 마요네즈, 머스타드와 함께 3개가 나란히 있어야 예쁘다고 생각했다. 언제 누가 산 건지 알 수 없는 참스 캔디는 늘 거실과 아빠 차에 한 통씩 있었다. 앤디 워홀의 실크스크린 작품을 처음 알게 되었을 때 호기심에 사 본 캠벨 수프는 오늘까지도 내가 먹어 본 수프 중에 가장 맛이 없는 수프로 꼽힌다. 초등학교 때 친구가 집에서 가져온 체리 에이드가 너무 맛있어서 시장에서 파우더를 사 달라고 엄마를 조르곤 했는데 늘 레모네이드 파우더만 사주셔서 어린 마음에 어찌나 서운했는지 모른다. 그렇게 큰 사건이랄 게 없는 흔한 일상이었지만 돌이켜보면 너무나 그리운 날들이다.
박건우 작가는 과거 건강 악화로 집 안에서만 생활하던 시기가 있었다. 어떻게든 주어진 시간을 견뎌내기 위해 아무 생각 없이 반복할 수 있는 단순 작업이 필요하다 싶던 그때, 외부 충격에 취약한 마스킹 테이프를 보고 묘한 동질감을 느꼈다고 한다. 그때부터 작가는 다양한 색상의 마스킹 테이프로 주변의 사물들을 재현해 보기 시작했다. 외부 활동을 하지 못하니 음료수 병, 과자봉지, 게임기 등 집 안에 있는 모든 것들이 작업의 모티브가 되었다. 작가는 어떤 목표도 없이 내구성 없는 마스킹 테이프를 겹겹이 쌓아갔다. 시간의 흐름에 비례하며 작품은 조금씩 견고해졌고, 원형에 가까워졌으며 건강도 회복되었다. 꾸준한 관찰과 완벽주의에 가까운 노력, 오로지 현재를 살아내기 위한 방편으로 묵묵히 오버랩을 반복하다 보니 어느 순간 단단하게 완성된 현재의 결과물. 그것을 작가는 오버랩의 가치라고 말한다.
기약 없이 기다리며 인내하던 날들도 이제 작가에게는 지나간 추억이 되었다. 그래서인지 박건우의 작품을 볼 때면 사물과 관련된 내 기억 속 오래전 일들이 바로 어제 일처럼 선명하게 떠오른다. 과거의 추억은 셀 수 없이 오버랩 되고 엄청나게 큰 무형의 덩어리로 변해 마음을 기분 좋게 짓누른다. 내용물을 정확히 알지도 못하면서 빼곡히 진열된 알록달록한 물건들이 그 시절 내 눈에는 왜 그리도 예뻐 보이고 가지고 싶었는지. 이번 전시

There was a store in my apartment complex specialized in made in U.S. groceries. My granny always squeezed AI sauce on my plate whenever we had meat for dinner. I disliked the tartness of that sauce; I liked ketchup better. I always thought HEINZ ketchup should always stand with mayonnaise and mustard, 3 of them in a row. A can of CHARMS candy was always in my living room and my father’s car even though no one knew who and when it was bought. I bought a can of Campbell’s soup, out of mere curiosity, when I first encountered Andy Warhol’s silkscreen prints, and to this day, it is the worst soup I have ever tasted in my life. I fell in love with the cherry Kool-Aid that I tasted from my friends in my elementary school. I twisted my mother’s arm to get me the Cherry Kool-Aid powder, but she only got me lemon flavor to my great disappointment. Nothing big, just an ordinary life of my youth, but I dearly miss those days.
Park, Gun Woo, the Artist, had spent some time at home due to his health problems. When he was determined to find a simple task that can be repeated mindlessly to bear his time at home, he felt this uncanny kinship to the fragile masking tapes. From that point on, the Artist reproduced surrounding objects with colorful masking tapes. He could not go out, so everything in his home from a drink bottle, a snack wrapping paper to a game console became the motif of his work. The Artist, layer by layer, stacked the fragile masking tapes without any purpose. As time went by, the art gradually got sturdy with shapes, and he gradually recovered his health as well. Steady observations and near perfectionist efforts produced the output of the day, sturdily completed after the repeated overlaps he put up with to survive his days. The Artist calls it the value of the overlaps.
The days of endless patience are now a memory for the Artist. Maybe that is the reason Park Gun Woo’s art brings up my old memories related to the object, crystal clear like the memories of yesterday. Memories of the past repeatedly overlap, and it becomes huge intangible lumps pleasantly touching my heart. I do not know why I wanted those colorfully displayed objects because I did not even know what was in them, but I did want them in the old days. In our exhibition
